Surf clothing
The surfing culture has inspired surf clothing and made it popular.
The infusion of surf culture into mainstream America via the film and
music industry has made surf apparel nearly ubiquitous. In the 1950s
and 60s numerous movies were set on the beaches of Hawaii and California
and America's youth flocked around this new fashion trend.
Today the popularity of surf clothing is so large that some of the
biggest brand names are even listed on the stock exchange. These companies
sponsor professional surfers and contests so that their clothing can
appear on broadcast television events. ESPN, MTV, and even major networks
now broadcast surfing events.
The world's largest manufacturer of surf clothing is Quicksilver. Quicksilver
was founded by two surfers who decided to sell wetsuits for a living.
After they redesigned the wetsuit to be specifically engineered for
surfers, they introduced a range of products before there was any other
competition in the market.
